TikTok gets a breather: Trump gives deadline extension until December

Donald Trump has once again extended the deadline for TikTok to operate in the United States, giving the Chinese company ByteDance more time to finalize a preliminary agreement. This latest extension, until December 16, marks the fourth time the law requiring the sale of TikTok has been put on hold.

Negotiations with China

The agreement framework was established in Madrid, following a meeting between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. While details are scarce, both sides have expressed a commitment to resolving the issue cooperatively and strengthening economic cooperation.

Between politics and technology

Despite TikTok’s role in Trump’s connection with young voters, concerns over data collection have driven the push for its sale. Experts now question the platform’s strategic value, noting that its technological advantage has waned over time. The focus now seems to be on TikTok’s user base and market share.
