Woman sues porn websites after her son finds her old laptop and watches explicit content

A Kansas woman has filed a lawsuit against several pornographic sites after her teenage son found an old laptop stored in a closet and used it to access explicit content. The lawsuit claims that the implicated sites did not implement the necessary measures to prevent minors from accessing adult material. The 404 Media reported on the case, which was filed with the support of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation Law Center (NCOSE), an organization focused on combating various sexual crimes, such as human trafficking and child sexual abuse. The lawsuit names Chaturbate.com, Jerkmate.com, Titan Websites, and Techpump Solutions (also known as Superporn.com) as defendants.

### NCOSE statement detailing the plaintiff’s situation
Q.R. is a 14-year-old minor who lives in Kansas with his mother, Jane Doe. Jane Doe was strict in monitoring her son’s devices to prevent exposure to harmful materials during such a crucial stage of his development. However, on August 12, 2024, Q.R. found a forgotten laptop in a closet. Unfortunately, the device still worked. Q.R. used it to access the internet and began searching for highly explicit pornography. The lawsuit is based on the accusation that the sites being sued did not implement age verification mechanisms required in Kansas, which requires authenticating users before allowing access to adult content. According to NCOSE, this would be the first lawsuit in the U.S. directly challenging alleged violators of age verification laws.

“It is extremely dangerous for these pornographic sites to offer a product that they know is harmful to minors, which is appealing to them, and that they effectively access without age verification, as required by Kansas law. Our plaintiff deserves every measure of justice,” the organization declared. Gizmodo attempted to contact the sued companies, except for Titan Websites, as it was unclear how to reach the company. NCOSE’s website also states that it has provided legal support in lawsuits against other well-known sites such as XVideos, as well as Twitter, which it accuses of violating a federal law on human trafficking.

This modern movement against pornography has gained strength, especially in conservative states, and aims to highlight the potential harmful psychological effects of pornography on youth. Over the past decade, states have passed laws requiring age verification to limit minors’ access to such content, although many of these regulations still face legal challenges. The effectiveness of these laws in practice is not entirely clear, as the use of a VPN can simulate that the user is accessing from a region where these regulations are not in force.
