Using an AI model, the system interprets magnetic signals from the brain as if they were keys typed on an invisible keyboard. And the results? Mind-blowing:

  • The scanner decoded up to 80% of characters participants were thinking of typing.
  • The AI not only caught the letters but also understood the meaning behind the words.

According to Meta, “We’re at the moment where thoughts become words.”

How Does it Work?

So, picture this – a volunteer sits in a MEG scanner helmet that tracks brain signals in real-time. The AI then analyzes these signals and translates them into words.

Researchers say that the brain creates a series of representations starting from the abstract meaning of a sentence and then translates it into concrete actions, like typing.

“By snapping 1,000 brain images per second, we can pinpoint the exact moment a thought becomes words, syllables, and even letters,” say the researchers.

A Game-Changer or Just a Tech Hurdle?

While this tech is mind-blowing, there are still some hurdles to overcome:

  1. The MEG scanner needs a super shielded room against Earth’s magnetic field, which is way stronger than brain signals.

  3. They haven’t tested it on people with brain injuries yet, so its medical application is still up in the air.
