When Your Interviewer is Not Human: What is Going Wrong with AI Job Interviews
Finding a job was already an exhausting and frustrating process for many candidates. But now, to that discomfort is added a new threat: interviews conducted by artificial intelligence. What was promised efficiency, is turning into absurd and terrifying situations that are leaving applicants with a feeling of rejection and total disconnection. How far will this automation go?

An interview that went viral (and creepy)
It all started with a video posted by TikTok user @its_ken04, where she shared her interview with “Alex,” an AI-powered chatbot. During the process, the machine started repeating meaningless phrases like “vertical bar pilates” over and over. Although the company had warned her that they would be using AI, Ken was shocked: “It was creepy. I got scared,” she confessed. The reactions on social media were swift: thousands of people shared similar experiences or simply expressed their outrage.
Candidates are saying enough
Ken was blunt: if another company wants me to speak with an AI, I will reject the offer. And he is not alone. Among the comments, many users expressed their strong disapproval of interacting with robots in something as human as an interview. “If they don’t bother to speak with me, why should I make an effort to work there?”, one said. The lack of human contact seems to be undermining what little remained of the connection between company and applicant.
Empty promises behind artificial recruiters
Companies like Apriora, creator of Alex, claim that AI interviews are faster, more economical, and more convenient for candidates. But reality shows a different side. Shared experiences in media such as Slate reveal cases where bots get stuck, repeat senseless phrases, or don’t even respond properly. The general feeling is that of facing a cold, flawed, and empathy-lacking system.

A job process plagued with algorithms and errors
The Paradox of Artificial Intelligence in Employment
Both recruiters and applicants use AI. Some candidates generate personalized CVs with the help of AI or practice interviews with it. But as technology is integrated across all fronts, the dominant feeling is one: the process has become even more dehumanizing. Automation, instead of bringing people closer, seems to have erected a wall between people and opportunities.
