Hungary demands more protagonism from the EU in negotiations with Russia
In his weekly radio intervention, Orbán accused the European Union of having “fallen asleep” in the management of the Ukrainian crisis and of letting others dictate the course of the peace process. According to him, Brussels can still rectify this situation by organizing a summit with Russia as soon as possible, preferably before the planned meeting between Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
Orbán suggested that the French president and the German chancellor travel to Moscow or, failing that, meet with Putin on neutral territory. He stressed that this meeting should take place “urgently” to prevent Europe from being relegated to a role of [source].
Negotiate before fighting
The Hungarian leader insisted that diplomatic channels should prevail over military action. “If Europe wants to have its future in its own hands, it cannot stay at home like a petulant child shouting from a distance. We must negotiate, not on the battlefield, but sitting at the table,” he declared.

Trump makes a move with Russia and Ukraine
Orbán’s warning coincides with Trump’s announcement that he will meet in person with Vladimir Putin and, subsequently, with the Ukrainian president. The US president has even proposed a trilateral meeting, in which the EU will not participate. However, Trump has had a phone conversation with European leaders to explain his proposal, which has reportedly been well received.
The US president has also issued an ultimatum to the Kremlin: start substantial negotiations for peace in Ukraine or face an unprecedented tightening of economic sanctions. The initial deadline of 50 days given to Russia was later reduced to just 12, which expires today. [Source: ]
