What Happens to Your Body When You Drink Soda Every Day?
A recent study by EatingWell revealed that 63% of adults in the US drink soda every day. While it may seem like a harmless habit, experts warn that daily soda consumption has immediate and cumulative effects on the body: from acidity and cavities to imbalances in blood sugar and metabolism. Even sugar-free versions have hidden risks.
## Putting Oral Health at Risk
Sodas are highly acidic and loaded with sugar, which erodes enamel and promotes cavities. According to dentist Scott Cardall, the combination of acidity and glucose “dissolves teeth.” Additionally, they reduce saliva production, essential for protecting gums and neutralizing bacteria.
## Gastric Irritation and Digestive Discomfort
The gas and acidity in sodas can worsen gastritis, ulcers, and acid reflux. Nurse specialist Nancy Mitchell warns that carbonic acid exacerbates symptoms in people with chronic inflammation, causing a burning sensation.

## Blood Sugar and Insulin Resistance
A single 12-oz can provides 37g of sugar, exceeding the daily recommended intake. Nutritionist Heather Davis points out that this sugar spike forces the body to release large amounts of insulin, leading to energy crashes, mood swings, and, in the long run, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

## The Hidden Risks of “Diet” Sodas
Even though they lack sugar, artificial sweeteners also have negative effects. Recent research suggests that they disrupt gut bacteria, increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, and impact glucose control. Additionally, they raise sweet cravings, leading to a desire for more sugary products.
As a safer alternative to daily soda consumption, experts recommend infused sparkling water with fruits, kombucha, frothy tea, or non-alcoholic sparkling wine. These options provide a refreshing experience while reducing the harmful effects of traditional sodas.
