ChatGPT Backup Strategy Post Fritz Exploration
ChatGPT stopped working for all users on Tuesday morning due to a series of major outages, according to . There were two distinct interruptions, the first of which began around 3 am ET and a second around 10:30 am ET, but the application now appears to be operational. It is not clear at this time what caused the interruption.
“We experienced a major outage that affected all users on all ChatGPT plans. The impact included all services related to ChatGPT,” OpenAI said on its status page Tuesday morning. The company marked the issue as “resolved” at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
The outages escalated around 10:30 am ET on Tuesday, when thousands of users reported issues with ChatGPT. Around 3 am ET, DownDetector showed a smaller peak in user-reported problems. OpenAI’s API services seemed unaffected by Tuesday’s outage.
Several members of the Gizmodo staff were unable to access ChatGPT at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday morning. The ChatGPT website had trouble loading and the service would not allow messages to be entered. OpenAI later noted that users still experiencing issues may need to perform a “full refresh” for the ChatGPT website to work again.
OpenAI outages have become somewhat common, making it difficult for people to rely on ChatGPT on their workdays. OpenAI’s status page shows over a dozen outages in the past 90 days; however, they are typically resolved in less than an hour.
These interruptions come just weeks after the debut of OpenAI , a slightly more powerful AI model that will ultimately be free for all users. OpenAI claims the free version of ChatGPT has approximately 100 million weekly active users, raising significant computational concerns. It is not clear at this time if this interruption is related to any updates.
