Collaborative Intelligence: Strategies to Prevent Cognitive Inactivity and Optimize the Human + AI Partnership

The presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace has become a permanent fixture, with its impact already being felt. However, amidst this rapid transformation, there is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed: the concept of “cognitive sedentarism” resulting from overreliance on technology.

AI as a co-pilot, not a substitute

Advancements in AI and technology offer numerous benefits, particularly when viewed as tools that enhance business operations rather than replacements for human capabilities. The idea of collaborative intelligence emerges here, with AI serving as a co-pilot that amplifies, rather than replaces, human cognitive abilities.

Nevertheless, an excessive reliance on automated systems or digital assistants can lead to the deterioration of skills such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. As noted by Nicholas Carr, delegating too much of our cognitive functions to technology can result in a disconnect from our surroundings and our own cognitive skills.

Multitasking or simple distraction?

Research conducted at Stanford University by Anthony Wagner and Clifford Nass indicates that “media multitasking” – the simultaneous use of multiple devices – is linked to decreased performance, even in basic tasks. Rather than truly multitasking, individuals tend to switch between tasks without delving deeply into any one task.

Given the constant changes in the current era of rapid transformation, maintaining our brain plasticity – our ability to adapt – is crucial.

A new role for leaders: designing the H+AI connection

Despite 92% of companies planning to increase their investment in AI over the next three years, only 1% consider themselves proficient in its implementation. Surprisingly, the key lies not in becoming experts in technology, but in creating conducive environments for effective AI adoption. This includes experimentation, identifying practical applications, fostering a culture of openness, and establishing networks of collective intelligence as learning communities.

Approached with an open and educated mindset, innovative ideas and solutions that benefit both individuals and organizations can emerge. This shift in perspective transforms technology from a threat into a tool for collaborative progress.
