Samsung’s Potential Future Innovation: Rollable Tablets?
From Foldable Screens to Rollable Ones: a Paradigm Shift
The flexible display market continues to advance. Smartphones with foldable screens have achieved remarkable acceptance, and Samsung, a leader in this sector, is not far behind. After launching models with simple and double folds, the company could be preparing something completely different: devices with rollable screens.
How would a rollable tablet work?
The concept proposed by Samsung involves a tablet that starts with a conventional size, similar to current ones, but whose screen can be extended from one or both sides. By pulling one side, the screen would unfold, offering a larger visual area.
However, this design presents certain challenges. To allow the screen to roll up, the device would have to be thicker than a standard tablet. To mitigate this inconvenience, the patent proposes a mechanism that allows extending the screen from both sides, reducing the thickness by dividing the rolled material.
This design promises to be extremely versatile. For example, with the screen at its initial size, it could be used for everyday tasks like reading or browsing. When expanded, it would become an ideal tool for watching series, movies in widescreen format, or even managing multiple applications simultaneously.

When will we see this technology in action?
Although the patent is promising, not all ideas make it to the market. However, considering the trend towards innovative display technologies, it would be surprising if Samsung does not explore this technology in future products. The possibility of customizing the screen size could completely change the user experience and open up new horizons for tablets and other electronic devices.
For now, we have to wait and see how this idea evolves. If one thing is clear, it is that Samsung continues to lead innovation in displays and that their next big bet could be closer than we imagine.
