YouTube Premium Lite: A Cheaper Option for Ad-Free Viewing
YouTube is testing a new ad-free subscription plan called YouTube Premium Lite, which is expected to launch in 2025. This plan will allow users to watch videos and podcasts without interruptions from ads, although it may not include all the features of the current $14 per month Premium subscription.
What to Expect from Premium Lite
With Premium Lite, users can enjoy most videos ad-free, but other features like ad-free YouTube Music, downloads, and background playback will be exclusive to the more expensive subscription. Leaked screenshots from last year suggest that there may still be “limited ads” on YouTube Shorts or when searching for content.
The Battle Against Ad Blockers
YouTube’s parent company, Alphabet, has been fighting against ad blockers, claiming they violate the app’s terms of service. CEO Neal Mohan is pleased with the increase in users watching YouTube on TV, as it allows for more targeted ads and QR codes. YouTube plans to offer additional benefits to Premium subscribers to set them apart from Premium Lite users.
