A Latin American University: Achieving Excellence Amid Education Crisis

Despite the challenges posed by state defunding, the University of Buenos Aires stands out as a shining beacon on the global stage. It is the only Latin American institution to be ranked in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings, a significant achievement considering the difficult circumstances faced by the scientific and academic system in Argentina.

Achievement in a Restricting Map

Even though the University of Buenos Aires has dropped 13 positions from the previous year, it remains the sole Latin American representative in the top 100 of the rankings. The university excels in six indicators, especially in employability (ranking 12th globally) and academic reputation (ranking 34th), showcasing its prestige among employers and academics worldwide.

The Cost of Excellence: Science in Crisis

While the University of Buenos Aires continues to maintain its position at the top, its scientific foundation is weakening due to lack of funding. Projects have been put on hold, international cooperation programs suspended, and many researchers are facing financial hardship. The pause in essential programs for laboratory upgrades has led to a brain drain as professionals seek better opportunities elsewhere.

The QS World University Rankings, a highly respected index that evaluated over 1500 universities from 106 countries in its 2025 edition, has highlighted the University of Buenos Aires’ continued prominence in the face of institutional neglect. This recognition underscores the university’s prestige and resilience in the midst of challenges.
