Agatha All Along launches with mysteries to solve and a team to assemble
After months of marketing and many jokes, the Marvel spinoff series WandaVision starring Kathryn Hahn as the villain has finally arrived, and we want to tell you about its first two episodes.
End of WandaVision Series
At the end of the WandaVision series, Scarlet Witch was defeated and since then trapped Agatha in her own deception inspired by television. Instead of Wanda’s world of family dramas, Agatha finds herself powerless and trapped within a mishmash of small-town police procedural shows starring a clumsy detective. Agatha draws heavily from Mare of Easttown, True Detective, Coroner, Wallander, Borgen, Lilyhammer, and more. But now she’s back as “Agnes” and stars in her own series, Agnes of Westview (which is said to be based on the Danish series Wandavisdysen, with its mournful theme music and long opening credits sequence).
Solving the Mystery
As the star of a detective series, Agnes/Agatha must solve a murder case and is introduced to a nameless redhead who died from a severe blow after being crushed by something big and heavy. In the first obvious reference to witchcraft, Agatha’s partner notes that the victim is “truly and sincerely dead” after her mysterious accident. Among the items recovered at the scene is a torn page from a library book, and an earring that resembles one Agatha wore in WandaVision.
The episode progresses with Agatha investigating: microbes, fingerprints, and more. And as she works with her partner, unreal situations arise. Agatha is trapped in a spell, and finally remembers that she is the sorceress Agatha Harkness. And she has enemies.
Recruitment and Challenges
It’s not a parody but rather a satire of the detective genre, but it engages with the audience. The second episode shows the teenager “Teen,” also under a spell, trying to work with Agatha after freeing her from his. Agatha now has no powers, and nothing to lose. They form their coven and search for Madame Calderu, a fortune-teller who, however, does not want to join a witch as infamous as Agatha Harkness. The recruitment of candidates continues, and they realize they are missing a Green Witch, although Agatha does not believe one is necessary. So she recruits Mrs. Hart, who has a lovely garden.
In conclusion, there are things like Agatha’s new wardrobe, in the style of Doctor Who at the end of episode two, which are truly great. There are other things, like the theme song that supposedly sold 40 million copies, which don’t seem as believable or good. And the bizarre inclusion of Lisa Simpson with a witch’s hat. But everyone has their opinion, right?
