Austria installs first green hydrogen railway track
The Austrian company Voestalpine unveiled the first hydrogen-manufactured rail at Linz’s central station, marking a milestone in sustainable transportation. The innovative “green rail” is produced through a process that replaces fossil fuels with hydrogen, generating only water vapor as a residue.
### Green Steel Technology
Voestalpine’s project, developed through the HYFOR process, aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The green rail, produced in Donawitz, maintains the same quality standards as conventional rails, showcasing the viability of transitioning to green steel without sacrificing performance.
### Sustainable Future
The installation of the first green rail symbolizes a shift towards a more climate-neutral railway network, positioning Austria as a global leader in sustainable infrastructures. With support from mining company Rio Tinto, Voestalpine’s initiative is set to scale up production of green steel for future projects, contributing to reducing coal dependency in metallurgy.
