Some smartphones won’t support WhatsApp after October 2024

WhatsApp, the widely-used messaging app, is constantly evolving with new features and enhanced security measures. However, these advancements require resources that older devices may struggle to keep up with, causing some smartphones to fall out of Meta’s support.

Starting on October 1, 2024, WhatsApp will no longer be compatible with Android devices running versions earlier than 4.4. This change means that these devices won’t receive updates or support, leaving users potentially vulnerable to security risks and operational issues.

List of impacted phones:

– Samsung: Galaxy Trend II, Galaxy Trend Lite, Galaxy S3 mini, Galaxy Xcover 2, Galaxy Core, Galaxy Ace 2.
– Sony: Xperia M.
– Huawei: Ascend G740, Ascend Mate, Ascend D2.
– LG: Lucid 2, Optimus F7, Optimus L3 II Dual, Optimus F5, Optimus L5 II, Optimus L5 II — Dual, Optimus L3 II, Optimus L7 II Dual, Optimus L7 II, Optimus F6, Enact, Optimus L4 II Dual, Optimus F3, Optimus L4 II, Optimus L2 II, Optimus F3Q.
– Lenovo: A820.

For iPhone users, WhatsApp will no longer support iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 6S, SE, 6S Plus, and those running on iOS 12 or earlier.

What to do if you have one of these phones?

While WhatsApp may still function on these unsupported devices, it is not recommended due to potential security risks and lack of updates. Users are advised to uninstall the app if it cannot be updated or consider backing up their data for migration to a newer device.

Reason behind the decision to end support:

WhatsApp’s ongoing security measures and updates are crucial for its proper operation and protection against cyber threats. Older operating systems may not support these security enhancements, putting devices at risk of potential attacks. Consequently, Meta has opted to discontinue support for certain smartphone models to prioritize user security and app functionality.
