How to Avoid Your Phone Battery Exploding and Other Devices: Key Tips

Risks associated with charging electronic devices

The tragic case of a family in Guillena, Seville, who lost their lives in a fire caused by the explosion of a mobile phone battery in their home, has brought attention to the importance of safely charging devices. Although these accidents are not common, incidents involving mobile phones, scooters, and other devices are becoming more frequent. To avoid these risks, we have compiled a series of recommendations from the Fire Department of the Community of Madrid that will help you protect your home and your family.

Tips for safely charging devices

  1. Avoid sun exposure
Do not leave your devices exposed to temperatures above 50°C, as heat can cause the battery to swell and explode. Keep your mobile phone, tablet, or electric scooter away from direct sunlight or extreme heat sources.
  2. Charge on safe surfaces
Never charge your devices on flammable surfaces such as sofas or beds, where the risk of overheating is higher. It is preferable to do so on flat and hard surfaces that allow good ventilation and prevent the accumulation of heat.
  3. Charge outdoors when possible
For electric scooters or bikes, it is best to charge them outdoors, such as in patios or balconies. If you must charge them indoors, make sure it is in a well-ventilated area and never obstruct possible escape routes in case of fire.
  4. Use approved chargers
Always opt for approved or certified chargers for your devices. Low-quality chargers may not meet safety standards, increasing the risk of overcharging and malfunction.
  5. Avoid overnight charging
Charging devices overnight, especially with fast chargers, can be dangerous. The battery heats up more in these cases and if left unattended, it can overheat without you noticing. It is safest to charge your devices during the day and while you are present.
  6. Disconnect devices when charging is complete
Do not leave devices connected to the power source once charging is complete. Also, avoid using them while they are charging, as this generates more heat in the battery.
  7. Pay attention to overheating
If you notice that the device is heating up too much while charging, stop the charging immediately. It is preferable to avoid using fast charging if not necessary, as it significantly raises the battery temperature.

Additional measures to protect your home

Stay Safe with Smoke Detectors

For added security, consider installing smoke detectors in your home. These devices emit an early alert in case of fire, giving you the necessary time to act or evacuate. While they cannot prevent a fire, they are a crucial measure to ensure the safety of your family.
