Large Stick Insect Discovery in Expected Location

Australia is home to some of the largest insects ever seen, with the recent discovery of the stick insect Acrohylla alta believed to be the heaviest Australian insect. This insect measures about 40 centimeters long and weighs 44 grams, found deep in the tropical rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands. A mysterious photograph led researchers Angus Emmott and Ross Coupland to discover this new species, with only two female specimens observed so far. These super large insects are believed to live in the highest treetops of the jungles, making them exceptionally elusive. The discovery highlights the need for further exploration and preservation of ancient tropical rainforests, as there is still much to learn about these ecosystems and the species that inhabit them.
