Opinion: I love using the RECICLOS app to recycle my drink cans and plastic bottles in the yellow container!
Separating cans and plastic bottles for recycling in the yellow bin may not earn you a Nobel Peace Prize, but let’s be real, who hasn’t thought at some point: hey, I should get something in return for this gesture. Well, there’s an app that rewards recycling with actual rewards. It’s called RECICLOS and it’s proudly Spanish.
This World Environment Day, on June 5th, is the perfect moment to highlight initiatives that aim to protect our environment.
RECICLOS: Spain’s First Deposit and Reward System (SDR)
RECICLOS is making a difference in 689 municipalities across Spain, covering entire regions like Valencia and the Balearic Islands. With over 800,000 users already engaged, the app rewards every can and plastic bottle recycled in the yellow container with redeemable points: RECICLOS points.
Wondering what you can do with these points? Well, for starters, you can participate in biweekly draws within the app. For example, from June 1st to 14th, there will be a chance to win up to 550 “Atrápalo Vouchers” for various leisure experiences this summer. Additionally, from June 1st to 30th, there will be a draw for up to 800 urban-style foldable bikes.
How RECICLOS Works and Where to Get the App
Interested in joining RECICLOS? Simply search for it on the App Store or Google Play, download the app, and check if your municipality is part of the program on their website.
Every time you recycle a can or plastic bottle, scan the barcode on the packaging before disposing of it in the yellow container. Take a photo of the container to verify the action within the app. And voilà, earn RECICLOS points for each item recycled. The same goes for recycling at hospitals, universities, or train stations where 303 RECICLOS machines are already installed throughout Spain.
