The Latin American Army Rearming with State-of-the-Art Armored Vehicles to Strengthen its Power in the Region

In a context marked by tension and the modernization of arsenals, Paraguay has decided to take a firm step to strengthen its defense. The acquisition of new high-tech armored vehicles not only renews an obsolete fleet but also sends a clear message about its modernization.

An Expected Modernization

After more than a decade without major changes in its military fleet, Paraguay confirmed, through the Ministry of National Defense, the total renewal of its fleet. The plan includes 150 vehicles acquired from Oshkosh Defense, intended for tactical operations in the field as well as for logistical and administrative support tasks.

The Army’s General Commander, Manuel Rodríguez, emphasized the need for this investment: “Some units have been in service for over 15 years. We need to improve conditions to protect personnel and ensure safe mobility.”

These vehicles are designed to operate in high-demand scenarios. With a range of nearly 500 kilometers, they can transport cargo and elite troops across all types of terrain.

Among their equipment are M240 machine guns, MK 19 grenade launchers, BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile systems, light armament, and advanced communication systems. They can carry up to five soldiers and adapt to tactical missions, border control, or even direct combat.

A Strategic Reinforcement for the Country

The initial acquisition includes 20 units, while projects for vehicles like Urutu and Cascavel are being maintained. According to Rodríguez, these armored vehicles are key to confronting organized crime and optimizing troop movement.

The investment plan, totaling approximately USD 5.1 million, also includes the purchase of materials for local production of military equipment and improvements in the Armed Forces’ infrastructure, thus consolidating a more robust and modern defense strategy.
