Big News for European Passports in November – Here’s what you gotta know

From November onwards, European passports are getting a major facelift that will revolutionize border control in the EU and Schengen Area. Say goodbye to those classic passport stamps when traveling internationally! This new high-tech system aims to speed up entry and exit procedures while beefing up security across the continent.

### No More Passport Stamps
Remember those iconic scenes in movies and books where the hero gets their passport stamped upon arrival at a foreign destination? Well, those days are numbered. Starting on November 10, a new automated system in the EU and Schengen Area will do away with the need for passport stamps on international flights. This change builds upon the existing practice within the Schengen Area, where member countries already skip the passport stamping for flights between them.

### Tighter and Smarter Control
The Entry and Exit System (EES) is bringing border control for non-EU travelers into the digital age. No more stamps needed, as travelers’ entries and exits will be electronically logged. This system will keep tabs on visitors from non-EU countries staying up to 90 days within a 180-day period, making it easier for authorities to spot overstays. Not only does EES do away with passport stamps, but it also fights identity fraud and steps up security measures, giving European authorities a better handle on who’s crossing their borders.

### ETIAS: What’s Next?
While EES is revamping border management, another change is on the horizon with the delayed launch of the ETIAS program in 2025. This separate system will require travelers from non-EU countries to get authorization before visiting the nearly 30 countries in the EU and Schengen Area. ETIAS will be linked to your passport and comes with a processing fee of seven euros. While most applications are processed quickly, it’s best to apply in advance, as in some cases, it could take up to 30 days if more info or an interview is needed.
