Europe is gearing up to take on SpaceX with a new spacecraft inspired by Starship, thanks to a 40 million funding from ESA to Avio!

The European Space Agency has taken note of SpaceX’s game-changing reusable rockets and is now investing €40 million in Avio to develop its own version. This smaller but ambitious rocket aims to compete in the space launch market by offering a reusable upper stage capable of returning to Earth safely.
A Contract to Stay in the Game
During the signing event, Avio, known for manufacturing Vega rockets, was given 24 months to outline the design of this new rocket. The goal is clear: create a competitive option that not only saves costs but also ensures Europe’s presence in the evolving space industry.
A Design that Speaks for Itself
While technical details are still limited, the proposed Avio rocket is 36.5 meters long and inspired by SpaceX’s Starship. It is expected to use methane and liquid oxygen engines based on the MR10 technology, promising a compact design with a focus on launch, return, and reuse.
The Challenge of the First Stage
Initial versions of the rocket may not be fully reusable, unlike SpaceX’s approach. Europe plans to progress step by step, starting with the upper stage. The complexity is high, but the potential rewards are significant if successful.
