Former employee of OpenAI alleges that the company is violating copyright laws and destroying the Internet.
Former OpenAI Researcher Criticizes Company’s Business Model
A former OpenAI researcher speaks out against the company’s business model and writes on a personal blog that he believes the company is not complying with US copyright law. This adds to the growing chorus of voices that argue that the data processing giant’s business is based on legally unstable (if not outright illegitimate) ground.
Regulation is the Only Way Forward
“The only way out of all this is regulation,” Balaji told the Times in reference to the legal issues created by the AI business model.
Gizmodo reached out to OpenAI for comment. In a statement provided to the Times, the tech company refuted Balaji’s criticisms: “We build our AI models using publicly available data in a manner protected by fair use and related principles, and supported by long-standing and widely accepted legal precedents. We view this principle as fair to creators, necessary for innovators, and essential for US competitiveness.”
