White House does not deny allegations of Americans linked to Trump attempting to manipulate Greenland

What started as a journalistic rumor has escalated into a high-stakes diplomatic conflict, as the revelation of covert operations by American citizens allegedly linked to President Donald Trump has strained relations between Washington and Copenhagen. The White House’s decision to remain silent on the matter has only fueled suspicions.

A Covert Operation in Sensitive Territory

On August 27th, Danish intelligence services discovered activities of three individuals from the United States attempting to influence the region. Their objective was to exploit historical tensions between Greenland and its autonomous territory to promote annexation to the United States. The operation involved identifying residents with favorable views, compiling lists of allies and opponents, and establishing connections with local politicians and businessmen. This news came as a shock to a territory delicately balancing autonomy and integration within the Danish kingdom.

Outrage in Denmark and Greenland

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen condemned the actions as “completely unacceptable” and a breach of international norms. Greenland also expressed strong opposition, asserting that any interference in its democracy is intolerable. Aaja Chemnitz, Greenland’s representative in the Danish parliament, dismissed the infiltration attempt as absurd, emphasizing that only Greenland has the authority to determine its future.

The Unsettling Silence

Mark Stroh, the U.S Embassy’s charge d’affaires, was urgently summoned for explanations, but the State Department declined to comment on the actions of American citizens in Greenland. Denmark’s primary concern lies in the White House’s lack of denial regarding the allegations.

This situation is not unfamiliar, as the United States has previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland for its resources and strategic location near Russia. Despite this, polls indicate that 85% of Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States. The icy island, abundant in resources and crucial for Arctic security, continues to be a focal point for competing interests that overshadow the desires of its residents.
