The origin of potatoes, also known as patatas, traced back to tomatoes in a recent study
Discovery of Potato’s Ancestry
Genome biologist Sanwen Huang has made a groundbreaking discovery regarding the origins of potatoes. In a recent paper published by Huang’s team, it was revealed that modern potatoes likely originated from a cross between tomato plants and etuberosum, a potato-like species found in Chile around 9 million years ago. This finding sheds light on the longstanding mystery of the potato’s lineage and challenges the traditional belief that potatoes descended directly from etuberosum.
Genetic Analysis and Surprising Results
Huang and his colleagues conducted a comprehensive analysis of 450 cultivated potato genomes and 56 wild potato species, constructing over 3,000 family trees to explore the genetic relationships among modern potatoes, tomatoes, and etuberosum. Their research indicated that tomatoes shared a significant genetic connection with petota, a group of wild potatoes that produce tubers. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed that potatoes are likely a genetic hybrid of tomatoes and etuberosum, with tomatoes playing a more substantial role in the potato’s genetic makeup.
The study also uncovered that crucial genes responsible for potato tuber formation originated from a combination of genetic material inherited from both tomato and etuberosum ancestors. Despite neither tomatoes nor etuberosum possessing tubers, the genes necessary for tuber production were passed down through each lineage.
Implications for Agriculture and Future Research
This groundbreaking genetic revelation could pave the way for innovative agricultural practices aimed at cultivating potatoes without harmful mutations. Huang expressed optimism about the potential for further research into the genetic relationship between tomatoes and potatoes. As Huang aptly puts it, “The next time you enjoy potatoes, remember to thank the tomato, as it may very well be the ancient ancestor of this beloved vegetable. DNA evidence clearly indicates their familial connection.”
