Germans departure from Spanish islands as UK discusses “panic” amidst Turkey’s rise as new holiday destination
For decades, they were synonymous with the Balearic Islands: crowded beaches in Mallorca, developments in Menorca, and vibrant nights in Ibiza. But something has changed, as another Mediterranean destination, Turkey, emerges as the preferred choice for thousands of Germans.
## The data that raises alarms
With 2.7 million passengers in the last period and a year-on-year growth of 4%. Germany, on the other hand, shows worrying signs: 1.6 million arrivals, 13.4% of the total, with a 0.6% decrease.

## Turkey, the big winner
And Turkey, with more competitive prices and a hotel offer adapted to European demand, consolidates as the main refuge. The cultural proximity and the Mediterranean climate similar to Spain reinforce the choice.
Meanwhile, the Balearic Islands continue to lead as a German destination with 27% of passengers, followed by the Canary Islands (20.9%). However, the continuous decline in the islands raises doubts about the future of this market.
## A formula that could be running out
It remains a tourism giant, but the repetition of the formula —sun, beach, and gastronomy— seems to be losing attractiveness compared to lower prices and differentiated treatment in Turkey. The sector, aware of the trend, will have to reinvent itself to regain German loyalty, a market that shaped the Spanish tourism identity for decades.
