The mind behind USB: Ajay Bhatt
Ajay Bhatt, a computer engineer originally from India and currently residing in the United States, is credited as the creator of the USB port. With a portfolio of over 130 patents primarily focused on connectivity, Bhatt’s contributions have established USB as the most commonly used connection port worldwide. Despite the existence of multiple versions and models, the USB type A remains the most recognizable, although criticized for its lack of reversibility.
Why wasn’t USB-A reversible?
During the development process of the USB port, Bhatt’s team explored the idea of making it reversible, allowing for connection in any orientation. However, this approach would have necessitated a doubling of cables and circuits, leading to a substantial rise in manufacturing expenses.
Ultimately, Bhatt and his team chose a simpler and more cost-effective design in order to keep production costs manageable. While they were aware that this decision would inconvenience users, their primary objective was to make USB accessible and affordable in order to establish it as a global standard.
Apple and its different approach
In contrast to Bhatt and Intel’s strategy, Apple opted for connectors that did not have a fixed orientation, such as the Lightning connector, which can be inserted in either direction. Apple’s approach prioritized user convenience over cost-saving measures, offering a different user experience compared to the USB-A design.
