“Tech Companies’ Job Preferences and Industry’s Most In-Demand Positions”
In a rapidly expanding industry, technology companies are facing challenges in finding qualified professionals. In addition to technical expertise, organizations are seeking individuals with hybrid profiles that encompass both specific skills and soft skills necessary for navigating the demands of the field.
The most sought-after skills in the technology sector, according to the Colombian Federation of the Software Industry and Information Technologies (Fedsoft), include responsibility and trust, problem-solving abilities, and creativity. These skills complement technical knowledge and enable professionals to adapt to the ever-evolving market landscape.
Despite an annual output of 28,000 technology graduates, many countries are struggling to meet the increasing demand for talent. The ManpowerGroup’s Employment Outlook Survey reports that 75% of IT companies worldwide are facing challenges in filling their vacancies, particularly for senior software developers, junior developers, and IT and software development managers.
According to Ximena Duque, president of Fedsoft, the imbalance between supply and demand in the technology sector necessitates long-term solutions. Education plays a crucial role in bridging this gap, with an emphasis on early development of STEM skills and initiatives like Bebras that promote technological literacy in schools.
To address the talent shortage, organizations are investing in training and professional development programs, hiring junior talent with the intention of providing training, and embracing new technologies such as digitalization and remote work. Despite the obstacles, the technology sector offers ample opportunities for individuals willing to learn and specialize, with the potential for countries to serve as hubs for innovation and expertise.
