Remembering the 7 Functions of Old Nokia Phones: 1,000 Euro Smartphones Can’t Compete

What have we left behind in the evolution of smartphones?

In the world of smartphones, we have witnessed an impressive evolution in the last decade: we went from simple phones with basic functions to high-tech devices capable of performing complex tasks. However, in this leap towards modernity, we have also left behind some endearing features that defined the golden age of the early mobile phones, especially those that earned a place in our memories. In this article, we will explore seven classic functions of those phones that, despite their simplicity, many still miss in modern smartphones. What have we lost, and what have we gained along the way?

FM Radio

It used to be common to find FM radios on Nokia mobile phones. Today, FM radio is rare in high-end smartphones due to the disappearance of the minijack, leaving this feature for entry-level or mid-range models.

Physical Keyboard

The physical keyboard was an emblem in early mobile phones, like the Nokia Communicator. With the arrival of touch screens, this design was replaced by virtual keyboards and has become practically extinct.

MicroSD Cards

Older mobile phones relied on MicroSD cards to expand the limited storage. Although there are still some models with MicroSD slots, high-end smartphones prefer internal memory, sacrificing this expansion possibility.

What we lost… and what we gained

It is true that on the way to modern smartphones, we have left behind some useful and nostalgic features, such as integrated FM radio or the ability to change cases to personalize the device. However, what we have gained far outweighs these losses: today’s smartphones allow us to do things that were unthinkable 20 years ago. Now we carry professional-quality cameras, high-speed internet access, intelligent assistants, and a multitude of applications for every need in our pockets. Autonomy and some practical functions may have been sacrificed, but the power and versatility of current mobile phones have redefined what it means to have a phone in the 21st century.
