Microsoft is Creating a ‘Stargate’ to Take OpenAI to the Future
Microsoft’s $100 Billion Supercomputer “Stargate”
Microsoft is reportedly planning to build a $100 billion supercomputer called “Stargate” to power OpenAI systems. Stargate is said to be the fifth and final phase of Microsoft and OpenAI’s plan to build several supercomputers across the United States. It is rumored to be one of the largest and most advanced data centers in the world, potentially spanning hundreds of acres of land and requiring up to 5 gigawatts of power. Stargate is considered crucial for training OpenAI and running new, more advanced AI models than ChatGPT-4. The supercomputer could be launched as early as 2028.
The Inspiration Behind the Name
The name Stargate comes from a movie about an interstellar teleportation device found in Egypt. The gate leads to a distant planet where Kurt Russel and James Spader must free enslaved people from a false and powerful god.
A Gateway to Discovery
“The key to the past, the door to the future, the gateway to discovery,” reads the motto of Stargate, which inspired OpenAI and Microsoft’s AI supercomputer.
