Vatican confronts new phase in financial trial with revenge, espionage, and rescues.

The entire saga began in 2021 with a failed 350 million euro investment in a property in London. The prosecution accused middlemen and monsignors of scamming and then demanding 15 million euros to relinquish control of the building. Former Angelo Becciu was caught for embezzlement after diverting Vatican funds to his brother’s charity and paying off a supposed security analyst, resulting in a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Eight others were also sentenced for crimes like abuse of power and fraud, with appeals pending.

Uncomfortable revelations during the appeal

The appeal trial starting on Monday could be even more explosive. Since the initial ruling, thousands of text messages and WhatsApp audios between the defendants have come to light, mentioning the prosecution, and potential internal pressures. Defense attorneys claim these chats prove there wasn’t a fair trial, alleging direct interference from the pontiff through secret decrees expanding prosecutors’ powers. The Vatican maintains the trial was conducted fairly.

The scandal’s key players

Becciu, once considered a papal contender, was removed in 2020. His former deputy, Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, became a star witness after changing his stance and collaborating with prosecutors, influenced by publicist Francesca Chaouqui, a central figure in the Vatileaks case. Also involved is Genevieve Ciferri, a friend of Perlasca’s family, who provided some of Chaouqui’s messages to the prosecution, revealing personal interests, vendettas, and strategies within the Holy See.

Francis’ role under scrutiny

The Argentine pope signed decrees in 2019 and 2020 granting prosecutors broad investigative powers, including wiretaps. Newly uncovered messages suggest deeper involvement, with personal support to Perlasca and direct contact during key moments of the probe. In one disclosed letter, Francis expressed, “I am with you and praying for you. You can count on me,” highlighting the personal and political aspects of a process that may redefine transparency and justice within the Vatican.
