Three weeks of water required to fill a single pool: the largest oasis in the world
In the heart of the Sinai Desert, where sand and heat dominate the landscape, there exists an oasis that seems impossible: a colossal artificial lagoon surrounded by hotels, golf courses, and luxury residences. This project, which combines engineering and luxury, is much more than just a pool. It is an engineering feat that redefines the limits of what is possible.
A Record-Breaking Project in the Heart of Sinai
The jewel of this ambitious tourist development lies in the Citystars Sharm El Sheikh complex, located to the east of Egypt, near the Red Sea. In this inhospitable place, Crystal Lagoons created a 740-meter-long artificial lagoon that spans the equivalent of 24 football fields. This achievement was recognized by the in 2015 as the largest crystalline lagoon in the world.
The most impressive aspect is not only its size but also the context in which it is located. Surrounded by dunes and containment walls up to six meters high, the lagoon is fed by underground saline aquifers that are not used for agriculture. This approach allows for the conservation of freshwater and the maintenance of environmental balance in the region. The process to fill it, although monumental, is completed in just 22 days thanks to a highly efficient pumping system.
Technology, Luxury, and Sustainability in One Place
Citystars Sharm El Sheikh is not just a tourist complex. It is a city designed from scratch with a comprehensive vision. The master plan includes 750 hectares of urban development, with over a dozen lagoons, 30,000 residential units, five-star hotels, marinas, shopping centers, museums, sports academies, and multimedia shows.
The total investment exceeds 4.9 billion euros. Each component is designed to integrate with the central lagoon, which serves as the backbone of the project. According to its developers, the goal was to create a sustainable luxury destination using non-potable water resources without compromising local biodiversity or agricultural resources.
With over 11 hectares of crystal-clear water, this lagoon can compete with any beach in the Caribbean. However, access is reserved exclusively for guests and residents, reinforcing the sense of exclusivity that defines the project.
More Than Just a Pool, a Symbol of Innovation
What sets this lagoon apart from any other pool or tourist attraction is its symbolic character. It is not just about breaking a world record but also about demonstrating that even in the most hostile environments, luxurious, sustainable, and spectacular spaces can be built.
Crystal Lagoons has exported this technology to other regions of the world, but this project, located in the Egyptian desert, stands out for its audacity. In a scenario where life seemed improbable, today stretches an artificial sea that offers relaxation, beauty, and sophistication.
This wonder not only redefines the concept of a pool but also redefines what we believe is possible.
