Wow! Big white shark sets new records hanging out near busy beaches all summer
Last week, a study on shark-proof wetsuits showed promising results in mitigating damage from large great white and tiger shark bites. However, recent news about a massive great white named Contender may make you think twice.
## A Record-Breaking Shark
Contender holds the title for the largest great white shark ever tagged in the northwest Atlantic. Scientists from OCEARCH conduct various studies on the shark, collecting samples and attaching satellite tags to track its movements. After roaming from Florida to North Carolina and even making a stop at Cape Cod, Contender was last spotted near Nantucket. Maybe it’s planning a cameo in a new shark movie?
## Size Matters
Despite Contender’s impressive size, male sharks like him don’t compare to adult females who can reach up to 4.9 meters long. Deep Blue, another famous great white, measured a whopping 6 meters in 2015. And as Contender swims through the Jacques Cartier Passage in Canada, I have no intention of testing any “shark bite-proof” material anytime soon.
