Google Oops: How a Copy Mistake Wiped Out a $125 Billion Pension Fund
Google’s Big Mistake
Google recently made a major blunder by accidentally deleting the private Google Cloud account of a $125 billion Australian pension fund, UniSuper. This incident left more than half a million UniSuper fund members unable to access their accounts for about a week, as reported by The Guardian. The service was finally restored on May 2nd after the fund switched to another cloud provider.
Rising Concerns Over Cloud Service Reliability
With more businesses and governments transitioning their data to cloud software providers, concerns about potential failures and interruptions are on the rise. Google Cloud boasts a diverse client base, which includes 90% of generative AI unicorns, as well as major companies like Volkswagen and Royal Bank of Canada.
Notably, the US government and intelligence communities are increasingly utilizing cloud services for data storage and intelligence surveillance. They have formed partnerships with tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, Oracle, and Amazon for their cloud computing needs.
