Traveled to Mexico and found herself deported: the digital mishap that turned her vacation upside down
A young Colombian woman recently shared a harrowing tale on social media about how a simple message on her partner’s phone led to the cancellation of their trip to Mexico and her subsequent deportation. What could have been an exciting adventure for Vero García and her partner quickly turned into a nightmare of frustration and misunderstanding.
Upon their arrival in Mexico, the couple breezed through immigration control with their tourist itinerary in hand, which included plans to visit popular attractions like the Grutas de Tolantongo and go on a hot air balloon ride. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until a second immigration officer asked to see their accommodation reservation, sparking an unexpected turn of events.
The officer’s request to check Vero’s boyfriend’s phone revealed a seemingly innocent conversation with a cousin in the United States offering hospitality. However, the mere mention of the word “border” in the chat raised suspicions and led to a deeper investigation. Despite the couple’s attempts to clarify their intentions, they were ultimately denied entry on the grounds of a supposed hidden agenda to illegally cross the border.
The aftermath of the denial was a traumatic deportation process for Vero and her partner. They were separated, kept incommunicado for over 24 hours, and subjected to harsh treatment by migration officials. Stripped of their passports until moments before boarding the return flight to Colombia, Vero described the experience as distressing and far more severe than they had anticipated.
